The word “Asia” comes from the Ancient Greek word Ασία, and was first used in 440 BC.

Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world. The Asian landmass covers 8.7% of the Earth’s total surface. Almost 4 billion people live on this continent, which constitutes over 60% of the world population. Some of the more well-known countries in Asia are China, Japan, and Russia. However, the countries featured on this web site, Turkey, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and South Korea, offer a look at the many cultural variations that exist within the continent of Asia.





Languages

Asia has many different countries, therefore a variety of languages are spoken there. For example, there are more than 600 spoken languages in Indonesia, more than 800 spoken languages in India, and more than 100 are spoken in the Philippines.
